Step one is drawdown: decide how much water you want the tank to deliver between pump starts, then work back to total tank volume using the pressure ratio: total volume equals required drawdown divided by (1 minus (absolute pre-charge pressure divided by absolute cut-out pressure)), working in absolute pressure by adding roughly 101 kPa of atmospheric pressure to your gauge readings. A narrow band between cut-in and cut-out needs a much larger tank for the same drawdown, so widening the band by even 0.5 bar often costs less than upsizing the vessel.
Step two is cycle rate: divide your target drawdown into the pump flow to check starts per hour at peak demand, compare against the starts-per-hour limit on the motor data sheet, and upsize if the tank permits more starts than the motor allows. Set pre-charge at roughly cut-in pressure with the tank empty, verified with a tyre gauge on commissioning day, not the delivery receipt.
