How to Size a Hotel Water Tank and Booster Pump

Sizing starts with fixture count, not room count. Take the guest-room fixture schedule, multiply by the WSFU rating per fixture, then apply an occupancy factor for the property type, following the demand method in the National Plumbing Code of the Philippines read alongside the National Building Code. Head is set separately by the vertical distance from pump discharge to the highest fixture, plus riser friction, plus the residual pressure the top-floor shower needs; CDL vertical multistage units cover 20 to 100 meters of head. The number that catches designers out is peak hour. Hotel draw is not flat: peak-hour demand can hit 2.5 times the daily average, driven by the checkout-morning shower window and the evening return window. Size the tank on daily consumption with reserve, and size the booster pump on that peak-hour figure, otherwise the set is undersized on the only two hours per day that guests notice. Storage also has to buffer utility supply reliability, since many Philippine sites cannot rely on continuous mains pressure. On the pump side, the practical peak flow ceilings are up to 125 GPM (28 m³/hr) for a simplex set, up to 350 GPM (80 m³/hr) for a duplex set, and up to 750 GPM (170 m³/hr) for a triplex set, drawn from our commercial booster pumps range. Duplex is the default for hotels, not simplex, because a hotel cannot take a booster pump outage during occupancy and duplex gives one running pump plus one standby. Why Hotels Need VFD Duplex Control, Not Fixed-Speed Pumps

A fixed-speed booster runs full tilt or not at all, and every guest fixture sees pressure swinging between its cut-in and cut-out setpoints: a comfort complaint at the top floors and a water-hammer risk in the riser. A VFD panel instead modulates pump speed to hold discharge pressure at a single setpoint, so the pressure a guest feels does not depend on how many other rooms are drawing at that moment. The energy case is just as direct: because pump power varies with the cube of speed, a VFD booster typically saves 25 to 40 percent against a fixed-speed equivalent, and hotel demand is exactly the bimodal morning-and-evening profile where that saving compounds. Tank Material, Certification, and Fire Reserve

Most hotel ground tanks we supply are FRP or GRP modular panel tanks, because panels ship flat and assemble inside an existing plant room door, which matters when a tank is being replaced in an operating building. Panels are WRAS-certified for potable water contact. Fire reserve is a separate line item and should be treated as one. Hotel schemes typically dedicate 20 to 30 m³ of stored water to fire suppression, and that volume must not be drawable by the domestic booster, which means either a dedicated fire reserve tank or a shared tank with the domestic suction offtake set above the fire reserve level.
