Simplex means one pump, duplex means two, triplex means three. The choice is about redundancy and about how wide your demand swing is between three in the morning and seven in the evening. A simplex set suits small commercial loads with a tolerant occupancy: a small office floor, a warehouse washdown line, or a light industrial process where a few hours of downtime is an inconvenience rather than a shutdown. There is no standby. When the pump is out for service, the system is out. A duplex set is the common specification for condominiums, hotels, hospitals, and commercial laundries, because it gives you a working pump and a standby pump. The control logic alternates lead and lag duty so both pumps accumulate similar running hours rather than one wearing out years ahead of the other, and during peak demand both pumps run together. A triplex set makes sense when peak flow sits well above base flow and you want the pumps to stay near their best efficiency point across that whole range, or when the occupancy cannot tolerate losing capacity even with one pump down for service. Hospitals and continuous process facilities are the usual candidates.
