How to Size a 3HP Deep Well Submersible Pump: Total Dynamic Head

Horsepower alone does not tell you whether a pump will work. The number that decides selection is total dynamic head, which is the sum of five components. First, the static water level, meaning the depth from the wellhead down to the resting water surface, not the total drilled depth of the borehole. Second, drawdown, which is how far the water level falls once you start pumping at the target flow rate. Third, the vertical rise from the wellhead up to the discharge point, which for a rooftop tank on a mid rise building can be larger than the well depth itself. Fourth, friction loss through the riser pipe, horizontal run, elbows, check valve, and gate valve. Fifth, any residual pressure required at the discharge, converted to head at 10.2 metres per bar or 0.703 metres per psi.
